Band of Horses

An unpretentious rock band seems more likely to be an oxymoron of sorts than a truism, yet somehow Band of Horses inhabits this description with earnest while managing to get appropriately loud.  The atmospheric rock anthems churned out by Band of Horses may suit the taste of your most genuine and unabashed of musical cravings while giving you the rush of seeing how loud your speakers can go.

At its heart, Band of Horses is the project of vocalist Ben Bridwell.  Formed in 2004, the band has endured a fair share of changes to their line-up, but nevertheless turned out three successful albums in 4 years.  The latest, Infinite Arms was released in May of 2010 and reflects the guitar-heavy pop rock anthems familiar to Band of Horses fans.

The combination of influences from indie capital Seattle and Bridwell’s southeastern home are apparent in the quality of familiarity brought to the sound of this indie rock band.  The guitars roar and swell in an attempt to overtake the echoing vocals of Bridwell, but the lyrics always keep your feet firmly planted with their unfeigned simplicity.  The songs in between the power pieces serve to give the albums depth and complexity without detracting from the band’s personality.  Bridwell’s lyrics are endearing and the music is a refreshing departure from conventional rock, which can be welcome relief from your local Top 40 station.
