This is a band with a distinctive voice at the helm, a killer drummer as an anchor and some finely constructed tunes that can navigate across the line that separates the Indie world from that of Top 40. Nautical themes aside, Matt Berninger’s somber monotone voice and it’s symbiotic relationship with the intensity of the music are the heart of The National.
If I had to throw this band in a familiar genre pile, they would most likely end up in Alternative, but their spirit is pure Indie Rock. The music has a fervor driven by Bryan Devendorf’s command of the drums along with the addition of horn and string arrangements to a typical band lineup of guitars and bass. This fervor is grounded by Berninger’s contemplative lyrics that comment on the banality that can unexpectedly consume adult life. While this may not be a band that champions a bright new day, they will be your best companions to any pity party. Let’s face it, not every day is bright as a 120 watt bulb.
After 3 albums The National broke through the proverbial ceiling with their 4th album Boxer, released in 2007. Their newest release, High Violet is their best to date and looks to be an even bigger success.
What band is your companion on a less than 120 watt day? Do you typically associate a singer/songwriter with this kind of somber reflection?
